World Environment Day

On the 5th of June, 2007, the Villa Institute of Water Sports organized the marine portion of the World Environment Day activities on Sun Island Resort & Spa.
During the morning multiple clean up team went along the beaches, lagoon and house reef of Sun Island. Among the participants were Sun Island Resort & Spa staff, Villa Institute of Water Sports staff and guests of Sun Island Resort & Spa. Also the management team of the resort showed their support and helping hand in keeping Sun Island’s beaches and lagoon as beautiful and enjoyable since the presidential environment awards of 1999 and 2003.

In the afternoon, the whale sharks research team that is active in the southern part of the South Ari Atoll gave a presentation about the whale sharks and the research that they are conducting on the Maldivian reefs. Their findings should lead to a better understanding and interaction with the whale sharks which are found year round in the area.
The marine activities were held hand in hand with land activities organized by the resort. 500 coconut trees were planted on the island and in the plantation and around the island various fruit trees, vegetables plant and additional coconut trees were planted to enhance even further the “green feeling” on the Sun Island.

Also many activities are planned for the next year to create continuous awareness and contribution to preserving the local marine environment around Sun Island. Coral Reef Conservation programs, Whale Shark research and protection are among many other initiatives which started on the 5th of June.
